It’s become apparent to my wife now that I migrated my “work” sets home... I just set the HE-4XX’s aside (they hurt my ears after a certain amount of time, too heavy but I really love their profile) and pulled out the Meze 99 classic’s out (they have an amazing headband system...) but both sound pretty great through my Shiit Magni/Modi stack, despite not being the highest power setup. My wife still uses my castoff HE598's and my HE6XX’s are in the case next to me (my favorite long-session open back cans that are still with me after the flood). I miss what I lost in the flood but as I eye other sets I remind myself I have plenty.

I have a problem and I don’t even buy expensive headphones.

I have plastic tubs full of headphones that prove that I have a headphone problem. When you pick up one or two here and there and are buying by the pound it’s hard to say no (mostly Goodwill Outlet finds) . I don’t spend a lot on these things, but have some OK ones in the collection. I did spend $4 (it was a 50% off day) on some Bose QC15s that are excellent when flying, but those were at a fixed price and not by the pound; it seems kind of silly that I spent 10 times more than the price of the headphones themselves to convert them to Bluetooth, but at that starting price it’s really not that bad . I have some fancy Logitech 7.1 gaming headphones that are a little ugly - the ‘leather’ is flaking off the band and earcups - but that work just fine.

M y favorites are probably the ones I got for free. When I worked at an airport my office was next to an office that dealt with unclaimed luggage. Instead of donating stuff to charity they just tossed things in the dumpster, something that still irks me . When I saw a bunch of electronic gear one day I actually climbed in and started grabbing things. I did get several thousands of dollars worth of video equipment that day, from a few large-capacity hard drives to digital to analog converters to a Datavideo SE-500 video switcher.

I also grabbed some headphones, in this case Sony MDR-7506 Professionals. There is a reason that these are still industry standard workhorse units decades after being released.

The price on these have dropped over the years, but I’m still too cheap to pay even $100 for headphones. No, they’re not fancy, pristine audiophile cans, but they are remarkably good.

Had a small headset problem when my wife too k over my old Sennheiser PC363D after she realized that the crappy headphones and headsets she kept insisting we buy were uncomfortable to wear for the 6-8 hours a day she wears them for online meetings, plus they had terrible microphones. She thought she hated mine and after her first day not only did people think she sounded better, but she didn’t have any fatigue from wearing them, so she wouldn’t give them back to me. Eventually, I got her the newer version of them with the interchangeable cable for Christmas and all is fine in the universe.

They’re not the most amazing cans I’ve ever used , but they’re really great for a headset, and that headset functionality is important in how I use headphones these days.

One Schitt joke and I have no self control stopping that ball from rolling. Meze sound profile is very attractive and I did highly consider the model you own. Just can’t get past the 1900's tropical outpost radio headset mad e with coconut shells look.

So of course I settled on something even uglier. NAD Viso HP50 that I photographed in natural mid-Winter (nonexistent) light using a potato from 1938.

I think I have four pairs of headphones I use regularly: Bose QC25s which I used to use for everything but now I use as my work headset since they’re light and comfortable. The ones that get the most use now are my Sony 1000XM3s since I like the wireless convenience around my place, plus the sound is great. I have some AKG something or others that came bundled as a promotional offer from Samsung; these ones rest on the ears and I don’t use as frequently since they’re uncomfortable for extended use. Finally, I have a pair of PSB M4U2s that I got with some credit card points, and those ones I just keep around if I need some really compact earbuds on the go and my other headphones are too cumbersome.

So yeah, I do have a bit of a problem with headphones. To be fair, the Sony and PSB ones I got with credit card reward points. Unfortunately, I missed out on the Sony wireless noise-cancelling earbuds but I’m hoping they come up again soon.

Looks like you love audiophile kit and you’ve gone   down a dangerous, expensive road. I took a peek down the road, marveled at the gear, then turned back once I started pricing things - I just couldn’t get into audiophile quality stuff when listening to music (like really listening  to it, not as background noise) isn’t one of my primary hobbies anymore.

I buy cheap ear buds every few months.  I wear them mostly when running or biking

So long as you get the blue label. Red label are trash quality for hard work

Love these- my wife researched and got my for Christmas about 10 years ago. Comfy for long editing sessions, great smooth accurate deep bass and detail.

I picked up a pair of these back in the 90's for dj purposes, as an upgrade from the ancient Koss and Realistic I had been using.

Kinja'd!!!

Still have them, work beautifully and sound great to my ears, but the ear pads are disintegrating and leave me covered in black flecks so I no longer use them.

Now use a pair of these

I like them for editing because they don't "color" the audio like some. It's not punchy in any one way but they are accurate.

It’s not a problem if you have it under control, dammit!

I’ve found that having a dedicated device for each use case makes more sense than endlessly chasing a device that can do everything not particularly well. In my bucket of stuff:

Sennheiser HD555 at work, HD6XX at home. Logitech H800 for general wireless duties and phone calls around the house, Plantronics Voyager 3200 for calls outside in noisy environments, and Soundpeats Truewings for even more wirelessness when I used to take public transport before the lockdown, various wired earbuds for emergencies.

The HD6XX is fed through a Modi Multibit and Denon stereo receiver that I also use to power a set of bookshelf speakers when I feel like annoying the dogs.

I have exactly two pairs of headphones. A $30 pair of Sennheiser earbuds that I have somehow held onto for six years without losing, and a set of Monoprice self-adjusting retro headphones for when I don’t want to bug my roomates with late night gaming.

I have a “I found what I like and I’m hanging on to them for dear life” problem.

I have two ears and two use cases so I have two pair of headphones.

For exercising, I have some free AKG earbuds that I got with a phone or something. They’re acceptable. When they die I have other free in-ears around somewhere that I’ll try. I need to dig through my pile of tips and find ones that s eal better.

For stationary listening, I have Yamaha Pro 400s that cracked months ago and I’m trying to keep together because they sound fantastic.

Kinja'd!!!

Unfortunately my repair is failing and I need to fix them again. I’m starting to think about retiring them and getting something new, but, that would cost money ...
